"The Mikvah Project" in the Tychman Shapiro Gallery

“The Mikvah Project” is comprised of 40 black and white photographs by Janice Rubin, with accompanying text by Leah Lax. This exhibition is an exploration of the ritual of Mikvah today, and the many shades of meaning it has for different women, from traditional to alternative perspectives. Together, Lax and Rubin expanded the project to include oral histories and anonymous portraits of a variety of women, creating a multifaceted picture of contemporary Mikvah practice as told by the women themselves. In a social climate of personal exploration, ritual can be a vehicle in the search for meaning and spirituality. Mikvah offers a ritual that is ancient, and one that resonates with many other traditions around the world. Cosponsored with Beth El Synagogue.
